Spring Cleaning Part III: Healing Benefits of Space Clearing
Spring Cleaning Part III: Healing Benefits of Space Clearing
By responding to the energy of Spring through the act of decluttering and purifying our home and office, we create a powerful template for new possibilities. A home that feels sluggish or depressed can become vibrant and uplifting after a space clearing, and a room that is cleared has the feeling of being lighter and brighter.
By adding a Space Clearing ritual after Spring Cleaning, we claim our desire to have our space feel more like a sanctuary. This creates a sense of retreat from the discord of the world, a place of refuge and protection. A home that has been cleansed and blessed becomes a space where we can be relaxed and be ourselves.
Spaces, like people, hold energy. If your space feels stressful, stagnant, energetically cold, or uninviting, performing a ritual will clear the energy. Here are some times when performing a spacing clearing ritual would be helpful:
As part of your regular maintenance of a space, like a home or office, after you physically clean it.
When entering a new home or office to clear any old energy from previous occupants.
Because something just feels off or funky in your space.
When there have been a lot of intense emotions flying around the space recently, like celebrations, work or school related intensity, illness, or conflict.
How Do You Perform A Space Clearing? A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Set a new intention for your space.
Form follows thought. Before you do anything else, set a specific intention for your space. What do you want your space to help you release? How do you want your home (or office) to feel? For example, "My intention is to cleanse negative energy from my home, so I am focused and productive" or "My intention is to release my ex's energy and feel peaceful again." Speak your intention out loud to set the shifts in motion.
Step 2: You can burn incense, sage, palo santo, or use salt.
Sage belongs to the Salvia plant family and is derived from the Latin word salvere, which means "to heal." Research shows that sage can be used to benefit physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Palo Santo is a type of fragrant wood native to South America and is thought to be a vigorous energy cleanser. It can be burned as incense just light one end of a stick and spread the smoke.
Salt has been used to sterilize everything from cutting boards to wounds (ouch!), and it also clears negative energy. Here are ways to utilize salt throughout your home:
Dissolve sea salt in a spray bottle filled with water and mist the air of every room.
Place a thin line of sea salt in front of your home's entrance or around the perimeter of your property.
Dissolve salt in water used to clean surfaces and floors.
Use a Himalayan salt lamp.
Step 3: Open the windows to allow the energy to move freely.
Step 4: Wash your hands and face, taking off any jewelry. Remove your shoes as these will have absorbed their own negative energy.
Step 5: Start the cleansing process from the back of the house towards the front door.
Step 6: Light the sage and start walking from the back of each room towards the door to the room.
Step 7: Walk around the room covering as much of it as you can. Using a hand fan, waft the sage smoke into the corners of the room up to the ceiling.
Step 8: Go into every room, moving from the back of the house to the front.
Step 9: When you’ve reached the front, walk out the door and smudge sage around the door and frame.
Step 10: Open the door to let the energies move freely.
Step 11: Leave the sage outside to allow it to burn off in a bowl.
Note: Sounds also clear up energies. Ring a bell or use the Tibetan Bowl or a tuning fork to remove stagnant energy behind furniture, under the bed and hidden spaces.
