End-of-Life Doula: Paving the Way to a Good Death

A good death is demonstrated when we honor the end-of-life choices of the terminally ill.

End-of-Life Doulas are trained to help us do just that. They are non-medical, professionally trained individuals who assist in the dying process. They help individuals, and their caregivers, cope with death by providing physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual support before, during and after the death occurs.

Instead of providing medical care, death doulas help loved ones to create a comfort care plan that includes decisions around pain and symptom management, forming legacy projects, experiencing closeness with people who care, and establishing a peaceful resting space, we allow death to become a sacred human experience.

Once a death plan is completed, it is given to caretakers to follow, ensuring a person’s wishes for their desired end-of-life experience. A dignified death is an extension of the concept of a dignified life; one in which people retain their dignity and freedom until the end of their existence.

How does an End-of-Life Doula help?

An End-of-Life or Death Doula has a passion for compassion. They dedicate their service to caring for both the person suffering the terminal illness, and those around that person. Services can be tailored to what each different client wants and needs. Services can include:

  • Facilitating the creation of an end-of-life plan

  • Mediating conversations and advocating for the dying person to ensure their wishes are met

  • Formulating a death plan with the terminally ill that can include setting, ambiance, any readings, a specific fragrance, planning who will be present, lighting, clothing, and more

  • Encouraging the dying person to have any difficult conversations with loved ones that may help them go more peacefully

  • Helps plan and create a Legacy Project

  • Sits with both the dying person and their loved ones, providing comfort and friendship

  • Provides needed breaks for caregivers

As a INELDA trained End of Life Doula with over 30 years in the wellness industry, I am passionate about helping people gracefully transition out of life on their terms. If you know someone who could benefit from working with a specialized Death Doula, I’m happy to be of service.
