Forest Bathing Recap: Bathing in Gratitude

On Saturday, June 18, a group of 9 Forest Bathers met to express gratitude to Mother Earth and for all the gifts received during our encounter with Nature.

The early morning sunlight offered “perfect summer” temperatures as we hiked to our group sit spot. Our forest bath began by crossing the threshold of our busy worlds and stepping into Nature’s gentle arms. We sat on a yellow horseshoe bench and experienced an exercise called reciprocity breathing. We then discussed how a daily gratitude practice can act as a forcefield against depression. We looked out over the lake and surrounding grounds. We thought about the ancestors of this land and pondered how our state of Indiana means “Land of the Indians.” An Iroquois Native American Prayer of Gratitude was read before we made smudge bundles and a group smudging ceremony. The group was then instructed on making a Nature Art Mandala out of items found in the woods.

In keeping with the theme of Native American gratitude for the land, each participant was given a small gifting bag of birdseed to offer back to the land when taking an object for their Mandala creation. We concluded the hour-long forest bath with a tea ceremony of Dandelion and Hibiscus tea. We closed the experience with a sweet song about Mother Earth.
